Took the earliest flight out of Paris CDG we could find - Vueling 9980 to Rome. Had quite a scare at the security check as we were 20 minutes from gate close and there were like 200 people ahead of us in the security checking queue. We jumped the queue to make it to the gate in time but the flight delayed by more than an hour because of the delay of other passengers.
We targeted to catch the 13:36 Leonardo Express from the airport to Roma Termini. We were in a hurry because we tried to do Vatican the day we arrived because the next day was Sunday and the museum would be closed. Had our plan gone well we could get in before 4pm. But needless to say, with the delay, we arrived in Roma Termini 4pm and there was no way we could get in the Vatican Museum in time.
After dropping our bags in the hotel, we decided to still go to Vatican to see if we could get advanced tickets for Monday (but we were told we couldn't).
We went around to see St. Peter's Square.
We were told that we could still go into St. Peter's Basilica until 7pm, so that meant we still had 2 hours to see it. Upon entering it, we were immediately drawn to the breathtaking Pietà on the right.
It was crafted by Michelangelo in 1499 when he was only 24.
